Every cycle traveler we've met on the road so far has had trouble with their bike computer. It seems they are built to be discarded after a few months of use much like a cheap digital watch. Of course, this does not work well in countries where the gizmos are unavailable.
I am willing to pay more for a computer that will last the entire trip...
Any ideas?

I have a Catey 7 Cordless. So far 3 months Thai & Malaysia, 3 months Oz, 3 months India plus 6 months day to day stuff in the UK and still going strong (probably cursed now and will break tomorrow).
When flying I even remove the transponder.
Some people seem to be able to break the toughest stuff - others are OK.

hi,
i am using sigma sport 1200. no problems so far and it is still running on first battery. i have done 17.000 km and planing to do another 15.000 before getting home.
i have bigger problem with bottom bracket - deore lx....
i agree with Simon.

Yeah, I've got the same one. . I like it but the cable has been crimped and one of the waterproof button covers has just pulled off.

My Cateye Astrale 8 just died on me after 1200 miles of light use. Just ordered this computer
i wanted one with an altimeter and the one I linked to got excellent reviews. i hope it lasts.

I have a VDO MC wireless that had stoped working several times. I wish I bought a wired version. Now I use it just as temperature/altitude meter and have a sigma 800 for the usual data.

gone thru about 3 different bike computers - now use a strap round handlebar gps. Downsides with gps are batteries, pressing buttons and not looking at the road and remembering to take it off when leaving the bike somewhere. Pros - they have loads of information that you can save and put in google earth, have a great backlight that points you back in the dark and they can be cheap. Amazes me how expensive and fragile bike computers are...
