Hi there,

I have done several cycling trips in India and have had excellent use for Google maps on my smartphone. But it was better some years ago when there was an add-on that gave me a altitude profile as well. (Don't remember its name, but it disappeared with some Android upgrade.)

What apps have you found useful while cycling?

http://maps.me/en/home

The basic is free and more than good enough.
You need to download the main which stays in the phone.
Than you need to download each individual country to get the details. Don't think it had altitude though.

Used it last year in Srinigar Leh and Spiti. On an Android

Maps.me android app is great. I use Google Maps or brouter.de (on a PC or Mac) to come up with a route, brouter.de will show you an elevation profile. Brouter.de has an option to export as GPX or KML. Export for KML if you are going to use it with the Maps.me on your android. GM will show you the elevation profile (on a PC/Mac) IF, you have the bicycle route icon selected and if the route has some hills (if it is mostly flat it just says, Mostly Flat or something like that.) If GM then cut and paste the URL into GPSVisualizer.com to capture the route as kml. If you 'pushed' the route around, you may have to lock it in with a few carefully placed waypoints. Mail the kml to yourself or copy it to your device. Open it on your android with maps.me and there is your route. I have no experience with the brouter.de app for android. This might help, or not, : https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=tS&page_id=395178&v=L

Thanks a lot guys. I have installed maps.me in my fonepad, and am just now playing around with brouter.de in my computer which gives me an idea of the profile.

I am mostly concerned with the first couple of weeks of my upcoming trip, when I will start in Kathmandu and cycle Eastwards towards Darjeeling. I am far from in top shape and have not really been able to find out how far it is between guest houses.

Thank you!
