hi,
i came across tibet - kashi - ali - saga - shigatze - nachu - gormo just last last fall.
in gormo you can get extension for 30 days at PSB. they are nice. you need photo and copies of your last china visa or extensions. but when going there say you are going to lanzhou by bus or train. why - because it is still ileagal to bike it solo in whole quinginh province(i am not good at spelling)
there is check point just before gormo, but they have not stoped me. it was ok.
but going up towards tibet now. i would not do it. it is too cold. i was there in october and had major problem with frozen parts on bike, water - during the day the temp was around 0 C, and night has to be around -15 C. it was cold!
from gormo to kashi by bike you need cca. 45 days.
if you have any more question drop the line. :)
and when you cross east tibet could you send me some basics from the road. will be there at the end of spring.
good luck & enjoy :)
Hi Ge and Benoit
Just saw your site - looks great!
Apparently you cannot get Kyrgyzstan visa in Kashgar - you might have to go to Urumqui (I will get my visa Kyrg visa in Delhi I hope)... best info on central asian visas seems to be the stantours website
www.stantours.com

Hope to see you soon!
Rob

I biked Yunnan-Tibet in 2005, and after crossing the 'border' at Yanjing at 4am, went through Markham )Mangkang) in the middle of the day, and then stayed in most towns on the way to Lhasa without serious problems - questioned by PSB a couple of times , but they didn't give me any real trouble.
You should be able to get an extension in Golmud, though I haven't tried it. You won't need a Tibet permit if you are leaving Tibet (Lhasa to Golmud, for example).
Reply #1 is incorrect that Qinghai is closed to solo cyclists. Some places are open, some--mainly in the west--are closed. You should be OK riding Lhasa-Golmud-Xining and beyond, for example. www.bikechina.com has a list of open cities and counties (Updated 01/15/04) at http://www.bikechina.com/china-open-city.html.

For the Kyrgyzstan visa, you'll have to make the sidetrip to Urumqi. The consulate is just north of the center in the pale yellow Central Asia Hotel. The $56 visa takes five working days; double that price for faster service. Tourist visas are single entry, one month. Note that you need to specify your entry date--you cannot enter before the date that you give and you lose days if you enter later.
Happy travels,
Bill

Golmud to Xining, and Golmud north to Dunhuang, are both open - I know, because the cops who caught me on Route 315 in Delingha last summer told me so, just before they put me on the bus out of the Closed area...

Hi to you both.
It's nice to know that you're still moving, but I'm not so sure that I'm still jealous of you having to deal with all that snow!!
It's a balmy 30'c here in Phnom Penh, the sun is shining and the only cold things here are the beers.
Best of luck through the mountains, hope you find some decent bouldering.
Rob and Zarah.
