Hi, I'm thinking of cycling Sweden for a couple of weeks this summer.

Having just had a quick look at a map, the south of the country is far more populated than the north and so I guess I'm interested in going up to the North as there will be more wild open spaces, less traffic and congestion, some good scenery etc etc.

I guess I just want some general advice on places to go around the country. Thx.

Hi there,

I have been to Sweden a few times by bike - but not for 10 years. I found the further north you went the hillier the terrain and more spectacular the scenery, but less people. If I had a couple of weeks I would probably ride from Goteborg north, up as far as you can go on the coast and then do a big loop back to Stockholm. I found places like Ore really good, and people friendly, but that might be a bit far north. I also rode straight up the middle from the southern most tip (after a ferry from Poland) which was nice scenery too.

Hard to be more specific when I don't know how much distance you can cover, etc. but it's a phenomenal country for touring.....

I'm a fairly experienced tourer and would expect to cover at least 100km a day. I'll have about 2 weeks and so I might have to jump on a train some of the way - ideally the areas with less interesting scenery. Is it popular with cycle tourers? No doubt there'll be lots of Germans but it'd be interesting to know.

Danny-
Beware!! The Swedish train no longer allows bikes. Yes, this is true. 5 years ago when I biked from Stockholm north, I got to Sundsvall I think, and pooped out (also beware that north of Stockholm is a lot hillier than south of it). So I took a train back to Stockholm but they almost didn't let me on. Apparently the Swedish gov't is no longer friendly towards cyclists and don't want bikes on the trains. The train station informed me that in the future it was bus it or be screwed.

hej hej!
sweden will be a great place to tour IMHO, although 2 weeks is a bit short :(
if you want to be around people then its the south for sure, if you want to tour alone then try the middle to north of the country. there are not really any specific bike touring roads, although there are shorter bike routes that are marked in various areas (mostly around cities).

i'll be doing a tour through all of sweden this summer and you can check it out here tour of sweden as it may give you some ideas....

whatever you choose, sweden is a great place to travel in!!
good luck!
