Last autumn I cycled a bit in the Indian Himalayas. I came from Nepal and only went to Nainital, Almora and Ranikhet before giving in to the mid November cold and dropped down to Jim Corbett National Park, and further South.

But I did very much like the Himalayas and plan to return this fall from around Sep 20. I hope the monsoon is finished by then and that it is still not too cold. I can not go earlier than second half of September, and think it is too late to cycle from Leh by then.
I am now looking for suggestions on bike journals that might give me good ideas on a route for that time of year.

Hello - we went twice to Garhwal and Kumaon (the second time supported). Our notes are here and here - we flew out in October both times.

Thanks a lot! I only saw your reply just now. There is obviously a lot to read and take in at the reports you linked to. I just took a quick look, and was impressed with the maps and all.

I may come back with further questions later on. But for now I just want to ask if it was really necessary to go by taxi from Delhi to Mussorie? Wouldn't there be trains?

According to our guide books there are buses and trains from Delhi to Dehra Dun, taking about as long as a car. It's quite likely that a train would be a better option. The roads around Delhi get slower every year as more people buy cars.
