This is not a serious "biking" question, but please do help if possible.

Internet resources mention that its easier to see more of the Versailles grounds on bicycle, since they are so large that walking becomes tiring. However when I googled for more, all I come up with is cycling tours for over $ 65. This is just too expensive for me. Does one necessarily need to join up on a cycling tour, or are cycles available for rent on an hourly basis?

X-posted on the W. Europe/France branch.

The grounds aren't that large - at least the main part of the them. Maybe for someone who's eighty years old or really has some medical problems they are going to be an issue, but for most people - they are walking around and boating or sitting relaxing all over the place. In summer, you can always buy an ice cream if your sugar level is flagging.

Yes, I agree with the other poster. I HATE walking and will use my bike whenever possible. However, Versailles wasn't that bad. And if you do the gardens, which I did, your bike would be impossible anyway because I seem to remember that it's all stones for the walkways. Besides, I doubt they'd let you take your bike inside. I left mine locked up outside near the entrances. And Versailles's just one big tourist trap anyway. Didn't see any bike rental there - but that was 9 years ago.

Ah, well we must be wimps as we rented bikes at Versailles last summer ;) I can't remember exactly what they cost but it wasn't so much, maybe 4 euros an hour? That is just a guess from memory. You did have to put down a deposit or leave a piece of ID. You probably won't need one for more than an hour or two tops.

Thanks for the replies. I am reasonably fit, so walking by itself should not be an issue, but not sure how much time I have. So may consider renting a bicycle if it will save me a good amount of time.

That is, if the grounds are really not that large. If they are too large, perhaps, my sugar levels will indeed start going down :) I've got a bit contradictory answers on this on both branches, so need to see !
