It is with sad news I just heard about the death of another cycling tourist couple who were hit by a pickup truck while cycling across Canada:

This on the heals of the couple recently killed in Thailand. And I believe a couple years ago a couple were killed by a vehicle while cycle touring in Argentina.
It's not enough to make me give up this way of travelling, but I'm not happy to hear about all these cycling fatalities among cycle tourists of late.

Yes sad news indeed but unfortunately as there are more and more people taking up cycling there will be more and more road deaths.

We cycled parts of that highway years ago and having lived near Nipigon for many years, and felt the Trans Canada one of the worst to cycle.

Narrow highway with little shoulder. Large trucks getting wider and passing extremely fast.
Not my favourite place to cycle.

Many condolences.

Ontario in general is becoming very bike unfriendly. Where we live cyclists are getting verbally assaulted and run off the road (literally) with increasing frequency.

Generally in Western affluent countries, cyclists are seen to be a nuance.

Poorer countries may have more traffic and more people, but they're used to pedestrians and cyclists. They also tend to be more forgiving and tolerant drivers.

In the west we too have had empty cans thrown at us.
Go figure.

In my experience that is 100% true onrrbike. Sri Lanka had some crazy traffic and drivers but not once did we have a driver who was hostile to us.

If the driver in this case had not swerved and hit (and injure) drivers in the oncoming lane he probably would just get a slap on the wrist.

Hey mkadey, can you please let us know where you live? I live and cycle in Ontario and would like to avoid places with hostile drivers.

There was also this ... 3 Cyclists Killed in Quebec

Which was just over 3 years ago, by the way.

Most of the time I spend here is taken up with banging on and on about route choice. I'm amazed how many bike tourists don't bother with good planning and as a result end up on busy or dangerous roads.

We all run a risk every time we go out cycling, but we can minimise that risk with careful route choice.

This was a terrible tragedy - hopefully those of us lucky enough to still be here can learn from it.
