You can go from Teheran to Kashgar via Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kirgizstan. You'll probably only get transit visa for Turkmenistan so you'll have to do more daily mileage over Turkmenistan.
You can also go from Kashgar to Tajikistan. You can go over Irkeshtan pass to Kirgizstan and then you have a turn towards Tajikistan (over Kyzyl art pass) in Sary-Tash. Don't forget to arange GBAO permit for Tajikistan.
Bye, GoGi

Tehran is a good place to apply for the Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Chinese visas and it's a nice ride from there all the way to Kashgar.
If you're going for a transit visa for Turkmenistan I think you may need to get the Uzbek visa in your passport first - to prove you have a visa for the next country.
The Turkmen visa takes the longest - about 10 days - they fax the application away to Tehran for approval but don't keep your passport for the duration, so you can apply for the other visas whilst you're waiting. The whole process is a bit of a pain and requires at least 3 visits. You should get 5 days.
I required a letter of introduction from my embassy for the Kyrgyzstan and Chinese visas before I could make the applications. I think the Uzbek Embassy also needs this for some nationalities.
The Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan visas are pretty straight forward and don't take very long.
You need to get to the Chinese Embassy early as it's absolute chaos there. They want to keep your passport whilst they process the visa (tricky if you need it back for the Turkmen visa or an Iranian extension). A same day application doesn't cost much more so I went for that.
They issue a 2 month Chinese visa in Tehran but you can pick one up in Tashkent if you've had enough of it all by then.
There were quite a few cyclists sitting around waiting for visas in the Mashad Hostel in Tehran whilst I was there. It's usefull to get the process explained to you before hand so it would be a good place to stay.
Best of luck!
