Is it possible to buy guide books and maps in English in Lhasa. I imagine it's the sort of place that would have a second hand book store selling SE Asia maps etc.
Many thanks

at Xin Hua Shu Dian (biggest bookstore) get chinese road atlas around 5 USD (cover has a mercedes benz-like logo)
maps are in chinese but who cares they are the most accurate and allow you to deal with local especially truck driver to get your way.
Enjoy.
There's another simple English map (full sheet, color printed) which you can buy at most local bookstores like the Xinhua or Gu Xiu Na. RMB 16. They also have some Chinese-published English guidebooks for sell, but I don't think they are good. I think it would be hard to get a 2nd hand or new LP guide in Lhasa, unless you exchange it with other travellers.
For SE Asia map, you can copy my map if you want. I have a good Nellie map and some other Thailand maps... photocopy costs Y0.5 in Lhasa.

Thanks
I have the Rise Know How of Tibet, what I really need is a map to get me to either the Laos border or the Vietnamese border as the RKH only goes to Zhongdian (or thereabouts).
Pazu will drop by for definate.

3 kinds of maps exist in Tibet:
- normal maps showing towns, villages, roads, distances, altitudes, etc.
- a book of maps of China divided into provinces and regions
- mine that is tailor made by an experienced guide showing more towns, villages, sites, distances, meant for road trips. You might find it in bookshops.
