I just finished a one-month trip through northern Vietnam and Laos and have posted a blog. Might be useful for anyone planning a similar trip, or just for a laugh... www.bradjdavies.blogspot.com

Cheers mate, thinking of doing a bit (more) cycling in Viet so will read with interest later.

One question though, why does everyone seem to get the train from Lai Cai to Hanoi (or vv). Is it because there is no accom on the way? Looking at maps there seems to be few towns, but the route follows a river so can't be tto bad????

Not sure in general, but in my case it was simply time and wanting to get to Laos. I think part of it is the fact that most people will have already been to Hanoi before, the best cycling is over by Lao Cai and most want to get on with the next part of the journey. If I had a year it would be different (did a two year trip 15 years ago), but maybe that's the explanation. There are plenty of people who have cycled that stretch for sure. Also, I spoke to someone recently who went to north east Viet and was disappointed (had done north west before) - for what it's worth... Safe travels
