Hi PhilipD, thanks for your link, indeed this story was always in my mind when we were camping in Tibet, we thought about the disadvantage but we still decided to tie our bicycles to the tent. It seems to be... well... safer.

And as another way to be safer (rather meaningless in fact), we use a rape alarm too.

Thanks for the replies - I've read enough cycle touring books, articles etc, but for some reason this topic has never been addressed. I'll test out some of the tips in September when I head down through Germany & Austria.

I'll peg part of the fly through the bike frame sometimes and a friend who also tours once said to me "I always lock my bike at night. I sleep better". Even when you think its the middle of nowhere - is it?
