I meant is that where you went? They are a Giant dealer. But they also have a few staff there quite knowledgable about touring bikes. That is pretty rare (unfortunately).

No I went to Sacred Ride in Jindabyne about 15 minutes away from me. Only bike shop besides the many in Canberra. They supply Giants only, pretty much. He had the Norco because he owns it himself and really enjoys it

With respect Noel, my first giant was an upland. I did the gibb river road, the dirt part of the savannah highway, and 6 months in india on it. As i mentioned the only major problem i had with it was the bottom bracket. I probably did about 9000 kms on it before it was stolen.

But in general i recommend a non-mountain bike.

My rack is not a tubus.

I know you know a lot about bikes but the guy is just looking for a cheap solution that will suffice for a first trip and I don't see anything wrong with his plan.

Agreed. Don't feel like I need to buy a stock touring bike for $1500+ straight off. This is my very first tour and I hardly know anything about bikes, how to take care of them, etc. I need something cheap I can beat up and learn from. Then sell for cheap after 6 months. Then I'll buy a good touring bike for a European tour.

I've decided against Specialized and the boulder 1 from Giant. If I buy Giant it will either be: Roam 3, Sleek 3 or Cross City 2 Equipped; most likely. Unless I find a better bike used. Definitely going 700 cc wheels and indifferent about front suspension or rigid. Preferably mechanical disc or vbrakes, and Altus or above components.

If I can't find this in a cheap enough bike, I'll probably just buy the Fuji Touring. Despite which bike I purchase, I'll upgrade saddle, tires and pedals. Possibly handlebars as well
