Hi. I'm hoping to compile a list of #1 bike shops in big cities along our route. I know about Flying Ball in Hong Kong & Probike in Bangkok. So Istanbul, Tehran, Tashkent, Lanzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore. Please let me know of any recommendations in these places.
Thanks

Hi Keith,
This site, although quite old, has a good list of bike shops from Istanbul to Ashgabat:
www.tandemtoturkestan.com/reference/bikeshops.html

The deltabike in Ankara has moved since, but their website has the new address and a map - it's small, but got a pretty good selection of parts:
www.deltabisiklet.com

There are loads of bike shops in Tabris - about 3 days into Iran from the Turkish border crossing near Dogubayazit. Some of these offer free services for foreign cyclists - from memory there are recommendations in the visitors book in the city's tourist information centre.
There's rumoured to be a good bike shop in Urumchi - but not in Kashgar.
There'll be no problem getting spares anywhere in Thailand or Malaysia.
You'll be falling over decent bike shops here in Singapore - Treknology is a good example, large and central:

Well, what makes a great bike shop is going to depend on what you need. For example, in Instanbul, road tires are nearly impossible to come by. Therefore, if you're looking for mtn. bike stuff, you've got it made.
Treknology in Singapore.
The tanglin Road store is ok with nice people, the Holland Grove is a bit bigger. Both have a workshop.
You can rent bikes too.
