We'll be landing in Leh mid July and are looking for a descent place to stay that we can prebook around the 700R - 1000R. We know it's not ideal to start in Leh but we'll be spending up to a week acclimatising. Some place where I got a bit of room to assemble the bikes. Seeing it'll be the only descent place to stay for some time, might as well make it a good one. Oh and a balcony would be nice too.
Thanks Fred

When i was there three years ago with Out There Biking we stayed in the Oriental Guesthouse. It was a very pleasant place, the family who run it are very nice and the food is great. No balconies but a nice veranda and quite a few cyclists seem to use it. But they were building an extension at the time so its possible this has resulted in a loss of character. If you drop Out There biking a line they may be able to recommend somewhere. There are no shortage of nice places in Leh.

Ok, so I cant remember the name. It was behind the Penguin bar. Directions as follows:
Stand outside the bar with your back to it. Up the lefthand side there is a stream... there is a pathway between the stream and the bar. Walk up this and go past the laundry shop which will also be on your left. Walk through the gate and up the ramp. Turn left. 100 meters down here on the left is an awesome guesthouse with courtyard. Running hot water too. For a twin it was 100RPs per night and a double was 125 per night. Fabulous place with enough space in the rooms for bikes too :) Sorry that I cant remember the name. Oh it also did hot cooked meals at night for a small charge- they were wonderful :)

There is heaps of room at hotel paul but the rooms are cheaper than what you've quoted. Follow the directions obsidian gave you and keep going. At the t-junction turn right. Along this road is Hotel Paul. They have a garden (like a number of the guesthouses), and an outdoor breakfast area/cafe also like several of the guesthouses. Its not in LP so if the others you aspire to are very booked up, you should find a room here. They are nice people. Oh but hot water for showers is only available at night. A double room was about 300r. Big room with bathroom. Not flash but adequate and about 2 mins walk from the Main Bazaar which is the main street.
More charming and about 800r for a room is Jigmet Guesthouse. Its in LP and will probably be busy.

Try Julay Guest House... its on LP... grt place... has traditional tibetian appeal... rugs, tables and the works... a big french window that opens into the starry night sky and loads of space... u must be able to get the numbers off LP India... if u dont get it let me know... i have a card somewhere....
