Athens to Germany - route suggestions

We'll cycle from Athens back home (Cologne / Germany) starting this April. Do you have any route suggestions? Of course we would like to cycle on quiet roads rather than highways.

Have you cycled on the EV8 lately? Is it still unmarked the whole way? Any other remarkable cycle paths?

I saw on various blogs that most people did cycle “inland” rather than close to the Mediterranean Sea. Is it due to traffic or is it more scenic?

Thanks a lot for you help

Close to the Mediterranean Sea there's quite a lot of traffic (especially Croatia). I can recommend to go through Macedonia, Albania, BiH, then maybe Slovenia and Austrian Alps. For planning such a trip, I buy a good map /look google maps and search for small roads going through mountains in the direction I want to go.
if you are german (or understand german) you can find many information and travel reports at: www.rad-forum.de
some nice places on the southern part of the route: Ohrid, Mostar, Prizren, Kotor, Durmitor NP, Albanian Alps, south western Serbia in general and many more.
