I am very interested in seeing this amazing area, I may be a bit nervous about that intricate road though....However I see there is a cable car, which I am sure will be fine on a nice day.......My questions are : Tour commpanies here? Hotels ? How do we get there? We speak only English, will that be a major problem ? I believe we can fly direct from Hong kong, and other suggestions?

I am so surpised no-one has given you any infomation. I have not been there as yet so cannot help you from personal experience, but its a major tourist site & it will be well equipped with anything you want from 5 star hotels to backpacker hostels. Whatever you choose, they will get you an english speaking guide in a heart beat.I did a quick google search & the Hunan Tourist site would be my pick. They list many hotels. Famous tourist sites always have plenty of English speakers available.Enjoy your trip, relax & have heaps of fun. But please do not attempt it during national holiday times. The weeks from Feb 1, (this year) May 1 & Oct 1 are the worst.Travelling during this time is chaotic & expensive. If you can buy a ticket for anything.

I don't think you can fly direct from Hong Kong. There is a flight from Guangzhou.

Here is a good thread from a couple of years ago. See http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1670044

we have been there twice, last one 2009.
the easiest is to join a tour from HK, there are departures every week, quite affordable, there are cable cars and easy walk, and I am 60. the scenery is stunning.
