Has anyone had any experiences - good or not so good - with tour groups through these countries? We are thinking of going up there in September / october, hoping to catch the Aurora Borealis/northern Lights maybe at Tromso. All suggestion will be gratefull received..................Also, what about a tour through Russia, either before or after Scandinavia ? We have previously toured Turkey with Cosmos and had an excellent experience on that tour. Hope to hear from someone soon.
You can travel through Scandinavia individually, no organised tours really needed, unless you need guidance where to go and what to see. People speak good English so you won't have any problems with communication.
Organised tours will be much more expensive and Scandinavian countries aren't among the cheapest.
Sept/Oct isn't the best time for northern lights. Feb/Mar is better. Anyway, planning is difficult like going to see rainbow on a fixed date.
Russia is the biggest country in the world stretching across two continents, so you'd have to specify where you want to go.
I went on a tour with Explore a few years back, and actually it worked out to be cheaper given the price of gas; the places I wanted to see could not be seen by bus, and renting a car plus paying for gasoline would have made this trip prohibitively expensive. The tour was small (we had 8 people total) and the camping gear was also included for those places that we camped.
