Hi Guys,
Any Hostel recommendation for Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra that is centre of the city or a budget hotel with a private room and ensuite? Hotels are not cheap either...
Budget would be $90 per day for both. Leaving in November for 4 days in each place. Dont want to use taxis so that why the hostel has to be in the centre close to trains, etc.
Have searched quite a lot... but they are more suitable for younger people and we dont want to stay in dorm.
I know I should be able to decide Hostels on my own.....(havent had holiday in years ... feel so out of touch).
If you do know of some hostels please do reply.
Another silly query.. when we take our own laptop with us.. is it easy to connect in the hostel where they say wireless available... how does that work... (so embarrased to ask..).
Cheers
Maya

Sydney Central YHA has doubles with ensuite and, being a YHA hostel attracts a wider age range.
Glen Ferrie Lodge Don't know a lot about this place but its somewhere that a college always recommends to overseas visitors. On the other side of the harbour but near transport and wouldn't take long to get into town.
Y Hotel Hyde Park This one is in a good location. Think it used to be the old YWCA, now completely refurbished. Looks okay.
theres another YHA hostel at Railway Square, just up the road from the Sydney Central one. Most big City YHAs now have private rooms. This one is built around a railway platform and has some rooms in old railway carriages. Link is one web page in #1.

We stayed at the "Wanderers on Kent" - private room, shared bath. Liked it fine and it was central to everything - shuttle dropped us off in front, train 2 blocks away.
If a hostel/hotel whatever says "wifi" there are several possibilities. The best is if the wireless internet comes from their own router and is free and has no password. Then you just sit down anywhere in range (depending on the strength of the signal this may mean that you can connect from your room or if the signal is weak, you have to go sit in the lobby opposite the wireless router.) You turn on your laptop, ensure the wireless option is activated and wait while it searches for networks. Try this at home so you get the hang of connecting via wireless. When it finds a wireless network that is unprotected you just click on "Connect."
The next option is that the signal still comes from the hostel but is password protected. You have to get the password from the front desk - might still be free or might be a charge for.
The final option is that they are connected to a wireless service. This means you connect to the internet and once you do a screen comes up telling you how to connect - always involves payment via credit card for wireless service by the hour, the day, the week or whatever.
