Thailand is a reasonable choice, and there are excellent hospitals other than Bumrungrad. Bangkok Heart Hospital is worth looking into.
Aortic Anurism doesn't sound like elective surgery.
In Australia if you don't pay into a Health Care Fund (which the majority of Aussies don't), then you go on a waiting list for 'elective' surgery for free under the medicare system. However, if it's a life threatening ailment, you will be treated under the free medicare system as soon as a surgeon and hospital bed is available.
I'm with 'wayworn1' on this ............................. might be best to ask for references from possible MD's then talk directly to anyone who has survived the said "medical treatment".
Check out this website:Rate MD's
I would never have considered asking the characters on the TT for advice before I had my lobotomy, but hay maybe there is a wealth of medical experience here that I never considered? :)

I am not sure if #12 is suggesting that you try to have your op in Australia or is just describing the situation in Austrlaia. The arrangements she has described only apply to Australian permanent residents or citizens. There is some provision for treatment where there is a reciprocal helath care agreement but US citizens are not covered by this.
Anyone else has to pay the full cost of medical treatment without a subsidy from Medicare. Probably cheaper than US health care though.
I expect that Australia is like New Zealand in that there are also private hospitals where you can pay for surgery and not be on a waiting list. You could find a recommendation for a good heart surgeon in those countries and contact them and see what would be your price etc. I am afraid that the american dollar is not going to get you such a good bargain these days but it would be a lot less than US costs.

He needs a vascular or general surgeon. Cardiac surgeons do not usually do elective AAA repairs.

Strewth mate,
I would do my research and fast.
AAA's can happen any time and there is no guarantee that it will wait until you do your research.
My husband's aorta burst (had no warning of that condition) -luckily we were in London and had reciprocal health cover as well as insurance .
My Thai friends go to Bumengrad (sorry about spelling) as do all the Consular staff in BKK. Has a great reputation with all ex pats there. Must be at least OK!

I have had personal experience with Chiangmai Ram in Chiangmai, Thailand, and would recommend them. They even picked me up at my guesthouse and dropped me off in a medi-van as part of the service. The last time I used them was five years ago, but friends who live there tell me their reputation is still excellent.
