Hi I used to post sporadically on TT a long time ago and tonight tried to answer a question on the South America board only to find I forgot my password. I couldn't regain my old identity since my email had also changed. My question is, is this still the best forum to get that quirky, different and sometimes totally stupid answer to a travel question or has it stagnated? Are older travellers of whatever age still a hardy independent breed or is the forum dominated by package tourists and cruise ship passengers?

To avoid doubt I love to travel independently, solo with a backpack, staying in small local hotels rather than hostels but have also enjoyed cruises, but its been a long time since I went on a package holiday.

After a quick scan of the forum, and I mean a quick scan, it seems to me that it may be a sort of virtual club where people post travel blogs rather than a feisty opinionated advice forum.

Is it worth staying?

Yep.....we love feisty old guys here and we need some new opinions.

Hi,

Second post No.1. Especially from those that hide their nationality (Scots?).

Not so much of the cruise package mentality stuff and the few blogs are pretty damn good I have to say, also easily bypassed if you do not want to read them.

Maybe if you and so many others had not "deserted" it would not have been left to the few to fight on alone. Now join in the foray, it is worth staying.

this is about the only place you will get an uncluttered straight answer. There 'know how' here is pretty extensive. Questions are answered pretty quickly and sanely. Since the Purge at xmas, so much good information was lost to us, and many good advisors on the other branches have abandoned the tree in disgust. And between travelling, it's kinda nice to read blogs about places you have been or want to go.

Hi Auldguy! I regularly haunt these pages, and being somewhat of a shy wallflower, I don't often respond. However, I have frequently dn near(oops...are we allowed to say dn??) peed my pants laughing at some of the antics and misadventures recounted in the blogs. I am not alone! Seems to be a real community here, and is recovering from the Purge...! It has also given me the courage and a slight kick in the a(oops...are we allowed to say a??) to travel solo in my fav places, and for that I am truly grateful! I wouldn't necessarily describe myself as a hardy independent breed, but I sure do hope to be when I grow up!

Thanks for the replies people, I am glad to hear that this is still a place to be. I'm not sure feisty is the word to describe me TC but I'll try to grow into that. Thanks for the profile reminder Brax I think I fixed it. Yes Scottish and happy to be so. I didn't so much desert TT as fade away since I was never a prolific poster anyway. I'll try to contribute more now but don't promise anything. I knew nothing of the purge until I read these replies. I was looking forward to being a little bit inappropriate at times, surely that's a privilege we attain by reasons of age. I feel like swearing, right now, only because I may not be allowed to. I'll just say Jings! instead.

Welcome (back) Auldguy. We don't all post blog here on OT, but we love to read those that do. And we are rapidly becoming friends.
In my opinion, this is still by far the best travel forum, and I have visited several since the Christmas purge.

Ask me about the Island Builders of the Pacific.

TT is still the best travel forum for independent travellers. It has changed, but what hasn't?

I agree with post #3 ( jkkintoronto ) in the other thread by textibule - linked to in #6 post.
The style of speaking and exchanging views has drifted towards PC-ness and censorship, or self-censorship, that is called nicely 'moderation'.
It's such an ironic situation - ten years ago we still thought that internet would lead to more openess and freedom of expression.
