To raise funds for a project I have helped to set up in east Africa I give illustrated talks about my previous travels to many different countries, to local clubs and small groups of people - many of whom are in the older age group. (I am just south of Heathrow in NW Surrey)
I am often asked how come I am "brave" enough to set off alone? Yes its daunting - I started by joining 'adventure' groups with budget travel companies and adding a few extra days at the beginning and end.
But I found that sharing rooms with a youngster - well I felt sorry for them having to share with the only 'oldie' in the group. Then on walks - they often waited for me to catch up, but as soon as I did catch up, then they set off again giving me no rest!
Eventually I was brave enough to go alone, and now am happy to talk and give advice to anyone wanting to do the same...call me on 44 1932 562757 or 44 7867513588 or arrange to meet up if you live anywhere near to me.
Also something to consider - as a first "travelling alone" experience - travel out and stay in one place to help the local community plus get to know an area - and then go out on day trips from that place. Its usually possible to hire a local vehicle with driver who speaks good English at reasonable cost
I can help and advise about volunteering, especially if you would consider helping in Uganda..... It is not necessary to go through a tour company (volunteer tourism) who charge high prices and then actually send very little of your money out to the project you are working on
You can work out yourself that the return airfare is around £500 - £600 from London - depending on airline and season, and your pension could more than cover your food and budget accommodation (about £50 per week is sufficient for a developing country)
I hope the above information will be of interest and perhaps encourage a few "older travellers" to take the plunge and do something different while you are still reasonably active.
