Now that my husband is 81,we have found a considerable difference in travel insurance quotes and conditions. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced and reliable company in Australia? We are travelling to UK with stop in Middle East. One company we applied to require a medical examination and report by doctor each time we travel. Many Thanks!

have a look on the Commonwealth Banks website - can't remember exactly but a couple of years I directed a friend there - think they had to contact the ombudsmen or CBA did insurance - worth having a look though.

I think you will find that most Insurance companies will require a doctor's report once you are over 70. I use NRMA each time I travel and they seem to be quite fair, although the cost is more than what under 70's pay. If you do have the slightest thing wrong with you, they take time to consider if they will accept you.

I second what Shona says. Am not quite 70 yet but I don't know any insurance companiesin oz that will ensure people over about 70 without a doctor's report. Sorry

Since I posted my query,we got a quote of $689 (Australian) from RACV, only after my husband had medical examination and had doctor fill in two page report. I decided to check further, and found Medibank Private would insure us,with an "over the phone " consultation/quote of approximately $450. I then found the Australian Seniors Insurance Agency, listed on page 137 of the Victorian Seniors Card 2008-2009 Tourism Leisure and Recreation Directory.(I imagine a similar one is available interstate) I telephoned them and within minutes had arranged insurance for the two of us for $340. They are based in Sydney, and the policy is underwritten by ACE Insurance The policy was in our mailbox in three days.Check out www.seniors.com.au or phone 1800 024 848 It definitely pays to shop around. Thanks to those who replied.

though it is too late now - if you are doing more travel maybe worth looking into a credit card which includes travel insurance and whether you would be covered. We have just taken out CBA gold credit card, annual fee of approx $120 which covers all OS travel. My son is my additional card holder and is covered by my policy - as he has Down Syndrome we still have to get pre-existing cover at an additional cost of $50. This is still a lot cheaper than any other policy we have had in the past.

Thanks PoppyG,.We already have CBA card but I think if you check you not only have to pay for 90% of your travel cost to qualify for the insurance, you must be no older than 70. We have now passed that,my husband is 81. Its like car hire, many wont let you hire once you are 70-75 ,in UK however Avis will hire you a Mercedes up till the age of 99,or at least they did , am not sure if still applies Thanks again . Cheers!
