Senior tours

Interest forums / Older Travellers

I'm trying to find a trip for my 70 yr old father in law. I'm looking for a small tour, maybe 15ish people that he'll be comfortable going on as a single.

Are companies like Exodus, Explore, etc suitable for seniors?

I've looked a bit into ElderTreks, does anyone have any experience travelling with them?

Are there any other similar tour companies.

I'm particularly interested in finding a small yacht trip.

Many Exodus & Explore tours will be suitable for a 70 year old - their trips vary considerably in content so HE should check the dossier before making a decision.

He's obviously going to choose the trip he wants, he just needs a little push as he thinks only things like massive herded around coach tours exist.

The Adventure Company used to have a dedicated website but I think they still do trips dedicated for 'seniors'

I have been on several Eldertrek tours, and found them to be really good. Small groups, good leaders. They have a number of sailing type trips. Of course there is always the Galapagos... depending on how fit he is. There are quite a few 'wet' landings that can be a bit rough.

Is he hip?

I'm 68. I stay in youth hostels/ They are age friendly and family oriented. They have tours of the city. And free nbreakfast till 10 a.m.

I didn't see what time of year he'll come over.
This Texan lives happily and safely in Seville Spain.

He should waer a www.ricksteves.com money belt.
It saved my passport, plain tic, atm, and other things in the funny instructions. <--3 times in three years.

Cops can do nothing about tourist crime.
They don't get violent in Spain. Stiff anti-violence laws. They are just light fingered sneaks. And clever like you wouldn't imagine.

Good on 'im for trying it out.

The slower travel the better.

Siutcases suck, unless they are flat with wheels on the side. And soft sided.

He can get a good pack at a garage sale But train to fit one and pick one for our purpose With a belly strap, for balance and weight on hips, not shoulders. Go to a good camping store. Get help from clerk who's done it.

It my not be the old boy's last trip, if he dose it our way.
Folksy, Cheaper. With experience of like minds.
We all learn from each other.

Otherwise his trip is just abc. Another bloody cathedral.

"Is he hip?"

No, not in any way. He's only 70 but he seems more lie mid-80s. He's incredibly out of shape (exercise consists of walking from the house to the car.) His main interest is sailing. But he won't do a trip like a big coach tour, it's too beneath him yet he needs to be led around. So I was looking for a smaller size, slower pace tour that he could keep up with.

One thing I don't like about tours is; they tell when to leave. Justas you're getting the hang of a place,

A small are, is what lots of us here recommend.
Would he talk with many Europeans? I mean that's what most yank blood is.

And settle ina hostel we like or the crowd in one.
Lots of us geezers bkpk these days.

Hotels are to impersonal, let alone cost too much.
Al± hostels are different. Not like our cookie cutter motels.

Things are so much kinder and gentler here in Western Europe, than the states.

"Would he talk with many Europeans? I mean that's what most yank blood is."

He's English but lives in Canada. His wife died a few years ago so now won't travel because he's 'alone,' so I'm trying to convince him these smaller tours are great for him because he wouldn't be travelling alone, yet wouldn't be with an impersonal group on a whirlwind tour.

I see. You're right.
Some tour guests, stay in touch for years.

Good luck !!!!!

There are many small-group Elderhostel tours, some of them on boats. They are slower paced and less heavily scheduled, and lots of out-of-shape people go on them.

They are at www.elderhostel.org and go everywhere in the world. They're a US based organization, but have many Canadian travelers.

They have hundreds - really!! - of trips in North America if your f-i-l wants to try something fairly close to home for a first venture on his own.
