ooohotels in lima and cusco

Interest forums / Older Travellers

I am looking for reasonable accommodation in Lima and cusco for a 65 year old lady travelling alone. clean, comfortable and quiet at night. i speak reasonable spanish. can anyone also help with how a transfer can be arrranged if you arrive by bus? Thanks

Arrive where by bus? I personally would not take the bus from Lima to Cusco.

In any case, there are plenty of taxis in both cities.

If you are flying into Lima most hotels can arrange a pickup at the airport. Same goes for Cusco.

In Lima I'd also recommend Barranco over Miraflores, the latter being more popular with mostly younger backpackers. Barranco is more bohemian and has some of the best peñas in Lima (music clubs that offer folkloric music shows). Hotels/hostels in Barranco are also cheaper than in Miraflores.
I stayed at hostal Alison which was clean and at decent price.

In Cusco I'd recommend Home Sweet Home in San Blas. The hostel is run by a Swiss-Peruvian couple. You might like to consider something else, closer to the main Plaza, if you wouldn't feel like climbing many steps. The view over Cusco compensates for that effort though.

Bus travel to Cusco is quite exhausting. The winding, mountainous roads make it almost impossible to sleep. It's still perfectly doable. If you're prone to car-sickness take som tablets with you.
I understand you'd rather choose the bus option, allowing you to make stops in Pisco/Paracas and Nazca.

The bus depot is only 2 k from city centre – an easy walk. No need for a pickup unless you are arriving at night. I also wouldn’t take the bus from Lima to Cusco – not unless I was stopping overnight at the sites mentioned. Re Miraflores over Barranco – I would suggest you do check both areas as sometimes you can get a fabulous room in Miraflores at a lesser price and of exceptional quality.

In Cusco, there are many places to stay that would suit, and are lining about the historic centre or just out further. Many hostals provide pickup. If you reserve over the net you often receive a lesser price and it is then that pickup can be arranged. You can also receive recommendations as to your queries. We stayed at Inkarri hostal – can’t remember the other name at the moment – I’ll post it when I find it. We were very pleased with both. Basic, clean, comfortable and quiet at night – provided fresh linen and breakfast. Helpful with any queries too, as we were struggling with our Spanish (even so brought along a Langenscheidt). Great networking. Just try some of these – I use them all over the world from China to South America and have never been disappointed.

I just got back from Peru. I prefer Miraflores to Barranco. Barranco is so boring. If you want to go to Miraflores you have to take taxi or bus. There are too many places and activites in Miraflores, just sit in one restaurant having Pisco sour and watch the world go by. My husband and I (We are not young) stayed in Lima for 14 days at The Angles Inn, new, very clean, quiet, cheap, 5 minutes to the beach, 10 minutes to supermarket, John F Kennedy park.... In Cusco, check if the new section (in the back) at Qorichaska hostel is done. This hotel is in a good location, budget rates, clean. The old section is soooooo cold, no heater. "Hot water" is just luke warm water, and don't forget this month is the winter month - the weather is pretty cold. Not too far from Qorichaska hostel I've seen another nicer hostel, maybe more expensive too.
