I know that we have a number here but I had no luck with the search program and pulled up some tedious discussion of politics from 2004. Can you middle-aged/older female solo travelers to Turkey send me a link to your previous posts and/or websites? Thanks! I will be landing in Istanbul in early spring. I have no interest in shopping, buying rugs, drinking tea, or meeting younger men no matter how beautiful they may be, so let's not have another discussion of that topic, okay? I just want to see the more photogenic sights and perhaps get a bird guide for the spring migration. I did find the thread on dressing respectfully, and I'm happy to do that.

Haven't been, but try pm'ing Golden Oldie, a very experienced solo traveller, who's spent much time in Turkey.

Turkey has more things to see than you'll ever be able to do in one trip. Ten years ago I rented a car and drove around for 7 weeks, to all but the southeast, which at that time was having some troubles. The driving was easy (no traffic), the scenery was gorgeous (I kept stopping to take pictures), the food was great, the people were nice, and the weather was wonderful (April/May). The historical sites are all over, such as Ephesus, Priene, Perge, Aizanoi, King Midas' tomb, Sultanhani, (a caravanserai), the Ihlara Gorge, Cappadocia, Hattusas (Hittite city), and many more. You could easily bus around, too, if you don't want to drive. Turkey is one of my favorite places, and I LOVE Istanbul. Have fun! (PM me if you want more detail)

there is a hop on hop off bus out of istanbul that goes south along the coast. it picks up and drops off at hostels or pensions along the way. i was traveling north and too early for that bus but traveling on the national bus was just fine--they have a stewardess like on an airplane. lovely clean busses. many local tours out of many of the towns.

as lor says, it's a wonderful country, friendly and inexpensive.

re; dressing....i saw very few women in scarfs, compared to egypt it was very relaxed.

Thanks, all. I am sorry it took so long for me to respond but I went out of town not long after posting. I appreciate the tips and may PM you kind people once I've had a chance to do a little more homework on my own.
