Bloody hell, how awful. I am keeping fingers crossed that the insurance money is there for you ASAP. So sorry to hear about all this, especially as you were so looking forward to this trip, but glad that the medical crisis is over.

As for cameras, I think I'd cart 3 cameras with m. The one and camera I took on a year-long jaunt went bagarap the second month of the trip, but I didn't find out until I got home and had the rolls developed. Only about 25% were viewable, out of 75 rolls.

germuno,
It's nothing strange about 2 cameras. Some people like to take more advanced approach - one digital camera which is easy to carry, and for instance, SLR camera for pictures you can't take with ordinary camera (objects in motion, birds, animals, vehicles).
Personally, I'm too lazy to carry two, so I use only dig camera.

do you think that's the op's reason fieldgate?...if so ok...but i doubt it..she probably has wheeled luggage as well

...people pack too much and if you travel you see it.

..i think airfare should be based on total weight....make people think...not just about what they're bringing but about their weight

...weight is the biggest factor in fuel consumption...

OMG wm! for god's sake take it easy!

germ. two small cameras are NOT excessive. I took my small digital to Africa, and at the last moment threw in my old, small 35 mm.Olympus point and shoot and a couple of rolls of film. Turned out a brand new 'card' for the digital was defective, and I had no way to download the already full cards so i could reuse them... I found this out as I arrived in Timbuctu! I did some serious editing, but I was lucky to find the proper battery for the older camera, because it was all I had for the rest of the trip!

And thank you wm for the paragraphs.

I took two cameras because I was going to the Galapagos and needed a better one for the animals to get close up. The other is a mini thing which is excellent to hide away in your pocket in cities. Anyway fortunately I still have the mini one.

The EXCELLENT news is I have just received an email from the insurance saying they are going to pay the hospital money into my bank account in Oz. They just want to me to send them the claim form which I already faxed them in those 16 or so pages! i have emailed them back telling them to look for it but at the worst I will have to fax a few pages again as its still here.

And Canayjun I have also had trouble with brand new defective cards. That is why I have brought a few. Cheers everyone.

Germuno Yes I do have wheeled luggage as well because my back won´t stand up to carrying a full backpack anymore.. The point is that I am travelling for five months and need warm clothes and a sleeping bag for the bolivia part as it will be well below 0 when I get there. My pack is only a small daypack. I am actually trying to be as light as possible. I have seen many people carrying as much as I have going away for teo weeks.

Matilda, that's pretty fast service with the insurance company.... who do you have for a company? I have a small rolling duffle too to go with my oversized daypack and I have my reasons for doing it that way which don't need any explanation.

Germ uno, you know very well that you have been 'labeled' that a long time ago on
at least one other branch and not by me, I think it must have seemed fitting due to
the contents of your postings..... it has to me too and the name kind of stuck.

Do you need a sleeping bag? You do, only if you're going to hike on your own in wilderness. In all other places blankets are provided, or you can hire a sleeping bag for a tiny amount when going trekking and sleeping in tents.
My backpack for Bolivia was 8 kg and I also stayed in places with outside temp below 0.

Fieldgate I really take my hat off to you. To be honest I debated about the sleeping bag but I was interersted in going to uyuni and had reead posts about people not being able to get a warm enough one I decided to pack it. Unlesss I throw it away I don´t know what I will do with it now. However next time I travel I would really like you to give me some tips on what you packed. regards
