Malaysia, here we come!

Interest forums / Older Travellers

On Thursday, my 12-year-old grandson and I will take off for Malaysia. We've been planning for months and now it's finally here. We're both so excited! It will be his first hostel experience, although his father says we have to have our own private room. Luckily, it seems that 's doable in Malaysia is some backpacker hotels or in the hostels. Oh, and we'll be checking into the Sheraton Imperial Hotel (!) for 5 nights in Kuala Lampur, using 'points' that my daughter has earned traveling on business since, apparently, my son-in-law does not trust us to stay in a good hotel/neighborhood in the big city. Well, that's fine, as we'll have many more hostel experiences in smaller places during our 3 1/2 weeks. I'll keep you posted!

I have no doubt you will have a very special trip together. Your son-in-law makes me smile. I know our kids think we travel "dangerously" just because we like lower-rent neighbourhoods but the truth is, if you look at which hotels and venues the terrorists target it is always the 5* luxury hotels and clubs ....so tell your son-in-law to ponder on that for a while :)

Maybe not ;) If he ponders too long on terrorists and the like he could pull his son off the trip so never mind. As you say, there will be lots of opportunity for you to show your grandson an alternative style of travel and in the meantime who doesn't enjoy a little luxury now and again - especially when it is someone else's points.

Have a wonderful time. Next week we head off to Montana and Wyoming in the dream machine for 3 weeks. Not exotic Malaysia, but we are looking forward to it.

Lor,
Lucky you, and lucky grandson!
When my son was 12, he didn't want to have much to do with his grandma. You're both lucky to have such a relationship.
I'll look forward to your trip reports.
Cheers
Lee
