We have a sefl catering suite on the first floor of our house in a suburb of Vancovuer, BC. We are thinking of making it a "vacation rental" instead of renting it out monthly. If you were interested in this area it could meet your needs. If you don't rent a small car then you would need to walk about 1/2 km to the bus or 2 km to the shops. Transit into Vancouver is excellent.
Not really trying to "sell" this at the moment but it just seemed kind of interesting that you were asking about these kinds of places when this is what we are considering doing. Our son and his fiance lived in it for past 2 years but are now on the other side of the country in school. We will be doing some refurbishing in next month or two but this is a safe, beautiful area, big garden, great view, friendly neighbourhood.
