Hello,

I am 65 and pretty much used to travelling : backpacking 35-50 years ago, a bit more more comfortably later on.

I live in Paris and the past few years I have been renting self-catering apartments in various places on a 3-month basis mostly in winter in warm climates.

I need new ideas, new destinations and new addresses. Could anyone help ?

Here are my desiderata :
+ preferably warm and dry climate between November and April, but I am ready to have a try at colder places if it's really worth it
+ where I can get by with english or french
+ 3-month tourist visa easy to obtain for a french citizen
+ between 30 and 50 m2 fully equipped
+ satellite or cable TV and broadband internet
+ central location (quiet nevertheless) so I do not need a car at least for shopping;
+ pleasant environment
+ low crime rate
+ around 1,000 € / month (i.e. 900 £ or 1,500 $); if it's less, I won't complain.

It might be a tall order : that's why I am posting on LP.

Of course, I looked at sites like Homelidays which have thousands of places to rent. But I find it quite difficult to make a choice among so many offers especially if you don't know the area and have no idea if the owners provide reliable information.

As you can see, some advice/help would be most welcome providing it includes addresses and not just general suggestions about such or such a country. By the way, South Africa is out : I have stayed there twice and don't want to go again.

Many thanks.

Michel

Canary Islands - Tenerife is peaceful if you pick the right spot (Not central Las Americas, but Torviscas or Los Cristianos are fine). Good bus service, lots to see and do. Obviously Spanish-speaking but lots of English spoken and Spanish is easy if you speak French.

Hello,

Thanks for the answers, but as I mentioned it in my initial post, I am looking for specific tips, namely addresses I could contact; and addresses you personally know and feel you could recommend.

I have been twice to Morocco and twice to Turkey : I would not mind going again if you know a place I could rent considering my desiderata.

Many countries, including France, are nice at least in some areas; the problem is to find the right place to settle in for a few months.

Nevertheless I am grateful to those who took the time to read my post and tried to help.

Michel

If you nominate a country you prefer we may then be able to help. At the moment there are so many options it is almost impossible to make meaningful suggestions. ie - Essouira or Agidair (Morocco) have possibilities and there are apartments available which would suit your criteria however you would need to go there and ask locally for them as you won't find them on the net - or not within the price range you are looking at.

How about The Philipines? great beaches, weather good and cheap!

New Zealand fulfils all your criteria. And while not an apartment, the youth hostels there would be within your price range. Many people of our age use them and they don't have a limit on how many days you stay, plus self-catering facilities are generally available.

Nelson in particular is a lovely area, with national parks nearby. Bus transport within the town (and within many NZ towns) isn't great but longer-distance buses go to most areas and you can also hire bicycles. The hostel is very near the town centre, 5 minutes from the city's main shopping street.

In New Zealand, however, you need not stick to one area. There's a lot of lovely country to see and NZers are some of the world's most friendly people. Hitch-hiking is also possible.

I have a 'short list' of towns that I intend to spend a few winter months in when I get too old to backpack around, as I do now. My criteria are: pleasant weather (during Nov. - April), a good food market within walking distance, an apartment with cooking facilities, things to see that interest me such as museums, archeological sites, etc., pretty town. My short list so far is: Siracusa, Sicily, Vientiane or Luang Prabang, Laos, and Thesaloniki, Greece.

Hello,

To Lor,

Your shortlist sounds good : I have recently been thinking of Siracusa and Luang Prabang. Thesaloniki is also appealing.
I am going to look further into those destinations and try to find some addresses.

To neverwinter,

Good suggestion : I am currently making enquiries about Canary Islands.

To go_2,

Youth hostels are definitely out.

To ohwell,

I have already spent 3 months in Essaouira : I kind of liked it but a new destination might be nice. To my taste, Agadir is not much.

Thanks to all.
