Just back from a long weekend in London, England, which seems an extravagant trip from New England. However, it was my grandson's 14th birthday gift and his first trip abroad; I thought a week out of school and traipsing around would be too much for both of us, so crammed everything into 3+ days. It worked out well, with the Spurs soccer match the favorite. I forgot how much teenage boys eat and sleep, but since he ate mostly chips and fast food, it was not expensive (although I longed for vegetables.) We did the usual tourist route, with sidetripes for highlights of Harry Potter and Alex Ryder book scenes, and I had a grand time & got to know my grandson better. He got to learn about low end travel ("that's the bed? this is our room?") and by the third day was wondering how he could afford to get back there himself. Never a traditional religious prosetytizer, I nonetheless was happy to see he may be converted to seeing the broader world.

I'm so glad you posted this---I have grandkids coming up on this age, and they are beginning to say they want to go with me. Your idea of a very short FIRST trip is a good one. Their parents wouldn't dream of low end travel (my kids and spouses) so this will be a revelation to them----as it was to your grandson.
