Just got off the phone booking the air for our trip to Africa for my 60th birthday next year!!!
We are going to spend a couple of days enroute in London. So, I realize that downtown hotels are going to be very dear in August. But with only 3 nights there I don't want to be too far out. Does anyone have any recommendations for a clean and simple small hotel or hostel with private room that is well located and reasonably priced.

Something I can recommend is the Swan Guest House in Chiswick. We have been staying there for years and just love it. Last time we stayed it was 25 pounds per person per night (that was about 3 years ago). It is a lovely old family home, the owners are Sheila and Vic Hyam, 2 storey in a quiet street but near to the High Street and one minute from the train station. It is only 20 mins. travel time from London by the train and going the other way, it is only 2 stops from Heathrow.
You also get an enormous breakfast thrown in for the price, eaten in the dining room.
Address is 17 Thornton Avenue, Chiswick, London. Ph. 0181994 2870, Fax. 0181742 1354.

Thanks Shona. Everyone over at the UK forum was telling me to go to an Ibis or Holiday Inn express etc. Good lord, I am not stopping in London so I can go to the Holiday Inn :)
I've made a request for a reservation through one of those acoomodation websites. Hope they answer postively.

The poster might want to know how much it costs for a Round Trip (Return) ticket from the Guesthouse to Central London (Piccadilly or whatever).
This one is clean and very central but at 60 pounds for the room may be a little too much. Actually the chain hotels, as bland as they are, often present god value for money if you eat and drink elsewhere.

Mister Steve, sorry I can't answer the fare question for you. We were fortunate enough to have a friend who works, in the Transport section and he provided us with a pass for all our London travels,
on buses and trains.

No problem on the fare question. I just googled "London tube fares" and got all the info I needed. WHAT ever did we do before google LOL.
It seems that Chiswick is within the 6 zones that the Visitor Travelcard covers for unlimited use after 9:30 am.

I've stayed several times at one of the London School of Economics student places. There are 6 or 7 in very convenient places around the centre of London and they are available to travellers during university holidays, which includes August. You get your own room (includes doubles), with phone, access to terrific bathrooms and a kitchen, so you save a lot on meals. The price (I paid 32 pounds to stay in Bloomsbury 2 years ago,) includes breakfast.

That is very good that you got a Transportation Pass that gets you to and from your guesthouse on an unlimited use basis (after 9:30 a.m.). Otherwise, it would probably have added significantly to your costs, but I'm just wondering how much it would have added per one-way trip to or from Central London because transportation is no longer cheap.
