A funny thing happened on the way back from the market yesterday ... I tripped over a huge metal slab on the sidewalk right outside the grog shop. My head smashed the ground, big time, my big toe got wrenched under the metal sheet, I landed on the side of my right hand and then scraped the left knee and bruised the left hand. My groceries, purse and sun glasses went flying (glasses now no longer fit properly). I couldn't move for a few seconds then felt like a right pratt when what seemed like half Nadi town came running up to help. Two men managed to haul me to my feet, and when I asked one of the if my head was okay he sort of paled and just asked I could walk. So I probed my temple and felt a goose egg size goose egg; luckily no skin was broken. Ended up not being able to move my right hand, got a tension bandage and spent the rest of the day feeling somewhat wobbly and bloody silly. The hotel staff here have been wonderful, so I kind of feel like I've had an accident at home, not away. Spent an hour or two in the lobby with a cold bottle of water on the goose egg (no ice in the hotel), which caused some smiles of sympathy from people passing by.

Later in the day an old friend from the 'old' days dropped by - someone I met in the street last week told her I was here - Nadi is a small town! - so we went out (me hobbling on the damaged toe) for tea. I was so excited to catch up with her again, and she's going to contact another old friend so we can all get together when I get back from7 days R&R on the beach at Nananu i Ra (leaving for that tomorrow - yippee!). She and her husband have asked me to stay with them when I get back from the beach break.

Then the evening ended rather bizarrely when a young male Italian traveller asked me to help him make a video - the only available space being in my room (he's staying in the dorm) - so off we troop to make videos in my room :-)) Cougar-town gone berserk? Nothing so exciting, he needed to make a demonstration video for a job he's applying for in China, teaching English to primary schoolers. My room was re-arranged, flash cards made, and we made a15-minute video, on his smart phone, of his teaching method. Bit hard for me to hold the phone in my bandaged hand, but we did it and after many unsuccessful attempts he managed to send the 3 video segments to China. Then we went out for dinner.

The bandage is off my right hand today, it feels much better, my left hand has sort of stiffened up and is bruised, there's a big bruise on the inside of my left big toe which got caught under the metal plate, my knee is find and my goose egg is only slightly swollen, turning purple, and I'm developing a black eye. A first!

I wonder what can go wrong on the beach? But I'm going, even if I end up in a body cast today.

Edited by: Watsoff - because I think I'm still a bit groggy.

sorry, Watsoff, but i did have to giggle a bit. I think that my medical emergency travel supply kit now takes more space than my clothes these days! Are you trying to out trip me? (and i am not talking about travelling!) C 'mon... you have to admit I am tripster.champion, with 37 stictches from a trip in Tahiti, and a venous ulcer on my leg from tripping on a local beach. Hey i am bound to get worse, given that I am now being plagues with arthritic legs

LOL, you win, that's for sure! I'm just tired of having accidents every time I go away - maybe Alaska will break the spell. I've got the black eye now, which startles people on the street; my sunglasses were bent out of shape and don't sit on my face properly now.

I just heard that the young Italian traveller got the teaching job thanks to our video. I won't come out of retirement to make videos, even though it turns out that I was, in this case, a dab hand with the cell phone. I'm really chuffed for him, he's leaving for Hong Kong tomorrow, I'm leaving for 7 days R & R on the beach.

Hi,

Genuinely sorry to here of your mishap and glad you not more seriously hurt. Maybe you should have drunk the Grog AFTER you left the shop?

Ha - Brax beat me to it!
But, seriously, though I'm glad you're not even more badly hurt I think you should see a doctor/visit a hospital. Because there's a chance of concussion - and also you don't want complications to occur on your long flight home. Play safe, and take care!

LOL Brax, I actually hadn't drunk any grog at morning. I did once trip into a hole after a grog drinking party in a friend's village years ago, but not this time. I'll only drink a low-tide bilo now (small amount of grog in a coconut shell).

Go_2 - I was also a tad concerned about concussion, but there was absolutely no indication I might have even a mild case. Anyway, the hotel staff kept eagle eyes on me the whole day and the day after. Turns out I bruised my left shoulder as well, but only sightly.

jb - oh no! I spend 4 days at Seashell Cove (nostalgia trip) and it rained solidly for 3 of those days. I'll just keep fingers and toes crossed that the weather will cooperate, while I'm there anyway. Pity our paths won't cross while you're out here. I'll be back in Nadi on the 15th, staying at the Nadi Downtown Hotel (the old backpackers hostel), but I might be moving in with friends on the16th or 17th. I expect you'll be in Suva ... ?

Ok - I'll concede no concussion. Danger time for that has passed.

But you still need to be sure you're safe to fly home when the time comes. There could be a chance of DVT unless everything's healed up properly.
And I'm holding you to that promise of another England visit, even if not this year.

Ouch!
The husband of the couple I was stayng with after my operation had a fall like that, but he didn't trip over anything! Glad you are OK. His glasses (not sunnies) were so bet out of shape he had to go home via the optician.
At least in Alaska there will be lots of ice.
