I lived & worked in Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Canada, South of France. I have traveled in most European countries, Morocco, Dubai, Oman, South Africa, Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui), Singapore, Indonesia (Bali, Jakarta & Yogyakarta). Since my divorce 13 years agao, I travel on a strict budget (around 50€ / day). I don't need luxury, I want adventure. I'm 47 now, and the travel bug is getting worse... August my teenagers are gone. Another month of pottery in Joburg came to my mind, with some charity work on the side. But then I thought: mmm, I'd rather wait for warm weather, and seek adventure elsewhere. I have no travel companion. So safety traveling alone is an important issue. I use common sense of course, and dress appropriately also.
Places I want to see: Laos, India (rape seems to be an issue these days...) Myanmar (politically fine?) Malaysia,.... I'm going to Peru next Easter with a Peruvian friend :) I love meeting local people, am interested in history, cutlure, I looooooove food. I love the simple life, all I need is a clean bed with clean sheets & a clean bathroom. I don't like planning all in advance. I always change my mind... And I like to follow up on tips I get along the road. If worst comes to worst, I might just travel around Bali and other spots in Indonesia (I have a friend in Yogya who is fro Bali) But I'd love to hear your suggestions, your experiences! Oh yes, also asking my aunt if she is organizing any trips to the Congo in August, as she promised I could go along

You can live quite well for around 50 euro per day in Malaysia in quite a number of towns and islands.
Penang island around the heritage area is quite renowned for its colonial style architecture and temples and mosques as well as the fantastic variety of excellent inexpensive local and westen food at hawkers stalls, complexes, malls and local resturants.
Basic clean accomodation is also quite reasonable.

Agree that 50€/day is pretty comfortable for SE Asia. Burma, Laos, and the islands east of Bali are all fine destinations in my book. Burma was incredibly safe-feeling 2 years ago and I can only assume it's gotten more so. Met several solo woman travellers when there.

Thanks Tribolite. Is it easy to travel by train from Singapore? I have a friend there that I could visit first, and then travel onwards by train/bus/boat. Guessing that would be the cheapest way anyway. And I am not really looking for Western food :D

#3.Yah,it not too difficult to travel by train or air con coaches from Singapore to Penang, with some stops along the way for immigration checks at Singapore/Johore Baru causeway.Check to see if you might have to change train/bus at KL to Penang. Its quite a long journey which might take up to eight hours or more depending on the number of stops along the way.
Check to see if Air Asia or Firefly and other airlines offer cheap flights if booked in advance through the net.Might have to change flights at KL to Penang.
Penang is especially well know for its plentiful, tasty and cheap local hawkers stall food except alcholic drinks which are highly taxed by the Goverment.

Train travel from Singapore into Malaysia is easy. It's also possible to get a bus - up to Malacca and KL, or to the east coast - Mersing and then a few days on Pulau Tioman is a great way to recover from jetlag. From KL you can get into the rainforest, or up to Cameron Highlands (fairly cheap hotels available in both). And Penang is a multi-cultural soup of a city - great fun.

You can do all this on buses.

Thanks! I found details about train travel on Seat 61 http://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm#Choosing_the_best_seats Should have thought of it before, as I used the advice for my train ride from Cairo to Luxor last year.

Mahendra - don't you ever give up?

Are you looking for a 'care nurse' by any chance?
I'm betting you must be at least 90 by now, as you started off being 54 years ago.

Hi Scorpio1965,
I too, am a solo female traveler, divorced about 10 years ago. I have traveled frequently with my two daughters, but now that they are married and have bee off on adventurers on my own . Last summer I sent 34 days traveling solo in Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia. All of these places felt safe and comfortable for me, and I had amazing expereinces throughout! As you may already know, both viet nam and Cambodia are excellent travel values - and food in VN is Devine ! Luang Prabang inLaos was a jewel, but quite a bit more expensive .
My daughter joined me for 2 weeks in Burma at the end of my - which was fascinating !

Enjoy..!
