Turkey
or
Egypt

Can't seem to combine both in my budget (you know, the under $2000 including taxes rule). Need to decide soon, as planning to depart between end Feb & end March.

I'd really appreciate your opinion and reasons for choice.

Thanks

If you have never been to either, I would say that Egypt is the must-see. It has the pyramids, the tombs of the Pharohs, the temples of Karnak and Luzor, Abu Simbel to name just the major sights. The reefs in the Red Sea are second only to the Great Barrier Reef. Interesting oasis to explore as well.

Turkey has some inteseting sights as well but nothing quite that astonishing. Ephesis and Pergamon are interesting ruins. The Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Topkapi are much more recent, although certainly beautiful. Turkey is most inviting because of some of the places you can hang out, for example Capadocia or in the smaller towns on the coast.

In my opinion, if you haven't been to Egypt, you have truly missed something.

Would it not also be considerably warmer in Egypt at that time of year? I was in Egypt last winter for 10 weeks, January to early March, and I had perfect sunny weather; just cool evenings. It was overcast and cool in Cairo in January when I arrived but had warmed up considedrably by the time of my return there, from the south, in late February. Besides the perfect weather, I would agree with the same rationale as seagal and Lor, regarding the antiquities that is! And by the way, I spent 3 weeks just in Luxor, given the sites there plus day trips afield.

Flip a coin, it's as good a way as any to decide. If you actually have a preference but don't want to admit it to yourself, the interesting thing is that before the coin lands you will know which way you want it to come up. If that happens, you don't even have to look to see which way it landed.

Thanks all. Good idea cognomen. Will do it now ... running into bedroom to get coin.

Heads - Egypt / Tails - Turkey

For that time of year I'd definitely go for Egypt never mind what there is to see. Turkey is generally just too cold then (for me anyway).
The further south you go in Egypt the warmer it is, but at the end of Feb into March it's never too hot, just pleasant.
