Hungaria is beautiful, but was discovered decades ago by the former east block countries, even people from the west went there because it was real cheap for them.

Specially Germans who had friends or relatives in the DDR would go there to meet them.

Yep, Hungary and Budapest were popular in Central Europe. Last time I visited was 1982.
I guess the city looks different now, except for main historical buildings.

No - The city is still lovely: I think there is now an effort to preserve it. And, surprisingly, not full of eastern Europeans at all. I kept thinking it gives Paris a run for its money as far as beauty goes, but without the hordes of tourists.

Perhaps the Eastern Europeans have more exotic places they can now visit?

Prague, Budapest, parts of Bulgaria and Romania were popular in the 70-80s. Among friends in Poland I hear good things about Montenegro and Caucasus. I visited Georgia recently (my post #14) where about 50% of visitors were Poles, and hardly any westerners. One of the best destinations in Europe if you ask me.

Hi,
I still get amazed by what I find on my own doorstep. I travel the world over, go for a hike and wow. No Europe is good.

Georgia has been in my "possibilities box" since my last trip to the far east and north-east of Turkey. You can walk across the border and, with all the cheap flights to and from Turkey now, the air fare needn't be an expensive item.
