Nearly everyone I've spoken to whose been to Egypt told me they developed stomach problems very soon after arriving. One fellow who was there for a 3-day academic conference told he had to leave early the first day then missed the rest. I can't fill in the circumstances.
My guess is this is because the old rules about food safety, such as avoiding things like lettuce or any other produce that can't be peeled, have been tossed aside by today's travelers. In SE Asia it seems none of the them balk at salads and milkshakes.
