EARTHWATCH AND SIMILARInterest forums / Older Travellers
Now that I have some time and energy available I'd like to go on one of these "expeditions" where you pay to "help" researchers. I know several websites appeared on Lp some time ago, but my searching skills seem to be lacking. Can anyone help me out with sites please? Has anyone got any specific recommendations for organisations? Or, on the other hand, ones to be wary of?
It might help if you focus your request a bit - what sort of volunteering (animals? kids? teaching? building?) ? where - what part of the world? for how long? | 1
Earthwatch good Frontier bad. | 2
I've gone on several Earthwatch expeditions and each was a fantastic experience. It is a great feeling to be able to contribute to science and cultural understanding while learning and gaining hands-on experience that might otherwise not be available to you. Earthwatch volunteers provide invaluable support to scientists and scholars who are in need of resources to carry out their research. It provides the average person with an opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way while travelling and making new friends around the world. I studied Offerings in Bali, searched archaeological sites in Majorca, Spain for bell beaker pottery, and excavated shell middens in Thailand to learn about the people of ancient rice cultures. I highly recommend Earthwatch. | 3
I agree with JoanTraveller, I have also loved my Earthwatch experiences! They are definitely expensive but really unique. Highly recommend. | 4
