I forgot to recommend the Artes y Costumbres (arts and customs) Museum, in Parque Maria Louisa. Its just past Plaza de España.

This morning I met 'Gawkabout' - as he says. We went for coffee together. Kindred spirits, we are. It was great meeting you, Gawks. :>))

I missed the hostel crowd going to the feria last night so went on my own to at least see the illuminations. Most good-natured crowd I ever did see. Even when I walked in the opposite direction from the main thrust (cos I decided not to go into the fairground last night as it would be heaving, and to head back to the hostel) I met nothing but smiles. And I felt oh so safe walking the half hour back to the hostel on my lonesome after midnight - which I never expected to happen again.

This afternoon bought my ticket for Cordoba (1.30pm bus Friday and then, because it was 35+ degrees, spent the afternoon in air-con luxury in the city's art gallery. Wanted to see the El Greco cos I've never seen an original of his, only prints. Nice one. But the gallery is decidedly second-rate, I think. We have stolen their best pix. Until I went into the temporary exhibition of paintings from the Prado (Madrid's gallery). Saw some amazing Breughels. I think I'll spend a lot of time in the Prado when I eventually get to Madrid.

Tomorrow I'm going to walk about 9 kilometres to a little town that has some amazing Roman ruins. I'm going with a dorm mate from South Africa. It's her first 9 kms of 1000 approx. of the start of her 'via de la Plata' - one route of the Camino Santiago Compostella.

I've met a lot of people here going on it - they say the route is less crowded than the route called the Camino Frances, over the Pyrenees and across the north of Spain east to west.
I'm planning on doing it to celebrate my 70th birthday, three years hence. So it's less than a co-incidence that I'm meeting so many people here setting out on it. I even met a couple on the plane who were doing it.

Tonight, if I have the energy, I'll go to the feria. Or maybe I'll conserve my strength for tomorrow? Walking in the heat takes more out of one. Fortunately, I can catch a bus back.

In the Prado is a whole room of Heronymus Baosh. He was a 15th century altarpiece painter.
(go_2, I know you know him. But for others...)
He's called El Bosco, in Spain. So look and ask for the El Bosco room.

Little demons hanging out of trees and corners, abound in those paintings. "Garden of Delights" is his most famous. But its only a detail!!! on a big tryptic.

No - Madrid comes almost last, after Cordoba, Granada and Toledo and before I drop in on WanderinWilco in Alicante.

Well, today got a small taste of the Camino walk. Without a pack 10 km was a breeze. Though coming back I caught a bus as my knee, which i damaged last year, was playing up a bit and I wanted to save myself for lots more walking tomorrow.
Oh, Oh, Oh! I so want to do this Camino thing. Think I'll bring the whole plan forward to next year, if my knee will allow. The open road, with a clear destination and such interesting people along the way, is calling more loudly than ever. Who would have thought it?

But I hear it's like a drug. Gets into your system and under your skin. Ah well, it's got to be easier than running marathons I guess ....

yeah. the people are one of the best parts of it all.
