My wife and I have traveled independently to a number of countries. This year the grown kids will not be with us at Christmas so we thought that we would set out to experience that period in another country.
As other forum members have probably been in our shoes, I thought I'd seek your guidance.
My first thought was the German Christmas markets and some great classical church music. Then Costa Rica popped up.
We are thinking of spending about 7-10 days. Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.
If a small town experience comes to mind that would be valuable.

Thanks

My idea of the perfect xmas destination is one where they don't observe xmas at all.
Sorry, but I don't know of anywhere where the true xmas spirit survives but find it delightful and refreshing to be somewhere relieved of blaring commercialism, crowds and pressure. A santa balloon above a dept.store in Chiang Mai and fake snow sprayed on shop windows in Kathmandu indicate how hard this is becoming.....
My favourite was at a 3 week Buddhist retreat in N.Z. doing something beneficial rather than indulgent...

I spent Christmas 2009 in Solomon Islands in a village. They do the religious celebration (in a village chuurch with overtomes of a rustic stable in Bethlehem) and the family feast, but no gifts and no commercialism.

Ask me about the Island Builders of the Pacific.

We are in exactly your position - kids have their own kids for celebrating Christmas, and we will follow the idea of spending next Season away from it all in some warm weather with sand and beach. We do not expect to fully avoid the commercial hassle - it's on all over Asia, even in fairly remote places - but it is not felt so strongly if you can look out at the sea from the shade of a coconut palm tree.

But since I am German let me say something in favor of your other option: The big Christmas markets are very touristy, indeed, but the small local ones are usually very nice. Mostly organized by local charities, visited by the locals who meet their neighbors there. These, usually are only open on weekends in December.
As to concerts: bear in mind that all the musicians also want to do their last-minute shopping and be with their families, so most activities come to an end by about 20th Dec., and nothing much will happen before a few concerts around 26th to 30th December. The famous orchestras will all be on holiday, though. New Year's Eve and New Year Day are full, very full of concerts, usually of the light Johann Strauss spirit, very popular, so do book early!
Don't forget: It is either very cold (with snow) or pretty cold (with rain), and daylight is short. Hotels go down to a kind of emergency service, unless they are in popular cities with at least two handful of tourists.
As I said: we live here, but will (first time!) go away fro Christmas!

How about something a old and biblical, like Syria or Israel, the old city in Damascus or an apartment over the Christmas period on the sea of galilee.
