I have dreadful problems with my feet and I need a pair of boots that have fairly stiff, thick soles, good ankle support and look somewhat reasonable for female walking around a city (oh and are black). Has anyone seen anything matching this description?

When walking boots were commonly made of leather, it was relatively easy to find something but now they are fabric/gortex they tend to be multi-coloured and look like they belong on the hiking trail (which of course, they do).
.
I have a pair of Echos but the sole is much too thin.

Would love to hear you've noticed anything, anywhere, any brand.

Have you thought of trying walking/trekking shoes like the Nike and Sketcher ones that force you to walk heal-toe? They are advertised as firming the thighs, butt, and eliminating back pain. It's like walking over sand at first, but after a short while it feels completely normal. I bought a pair a couple of months ago because I have problem feet and orthotics only keep me going for an hour or two. Since wearing the new trekkers, in this case Sketchers, I am able to walk, pain free and for up to 5-6 hours. The ankles get a bit tired but no pain. As well, they are the most comfortable trekkers I've ever used. I no longer need my orthotics, not when wearing the new trekkers anyway.

I swear by my Doctor Marten's. I only have the shoes, so no ankle support, but the leather is really tough and the soles have seen me through eight countries and four+ years without showing signs of wear. (I normally go through a pair of shoes in 6-9 months.)

Have you tried "The Athlete's Foot"? I was advised to go there for shoes by my physiotherapist due to knee problems.

Ask me about the Island Builders of the Pacific.

I was also going to suggest DMs, although I bought leather walking boots recently, and didn't have any problem finding some (apart from the usual finding some small enough). They, however, are brown. I've never had black walking boots.

My friend bought me a pair of "Land Bridge" from Kenneth Cole a couple of months ago. They have something in the sole that makes it feel like you're walking on air. They have thick, blocky heels but the heels are high, which for me is more practical because I can also wear them in the city. I had a previous pair from Kenneth Cole that lasted over 10 years, same general style, black, thick blocky heel. But these are really comfortable. Will try to put a link. I have tested them on a couple of trips now and I can walk for hours in them.

Well, the link did not post. I'll try once more and then give up. You can just google them or go to any Kenneth Cole store, I'm sure, since this is a new boot issued this fall.

I love, love those boots Peachfront, but hard to imagine walking over coblestoes etc with them. I will have a look at Doc Martens. My son is a great fan - maybe I should try his! Thanks for the suggestions re the tone-up shoes and Athletes' foot.

Have a look at the Merrell range. They are classy enough for going out (well most are) and have cofortable soles.

I have a pair of Sorel Waterproof boots that I bought many years ago. They look like tennis shoes but have good ankle support, thick soles, and fit the criteria for your needs.
