I love islands. I live on a large island. Friends recently moved to a smaller island (Saltspring) about half an hour by ferry from the bigger Island. They invited me out for the weekend to see their new house and GUEST COTTAGE.
right now it is early in the morning. I am looking past the computer, out a window that oversees the sun rising on rolling green hills, meandering fences, autumn tinged yellow/green maple leaved bushes, and golden ferns. Their nubian goat is standing on the roof of his shelter watching the sunrise with me, and i think i have died and gone to heaven.
The guest house is simple but perfect - used by my host (who is a writer) as his office and studio. It has a small bedroom, living area kitchen and bathroom. A skylight in the Livingroom lets in even more light. Their two cats have 'tested' ZTWD and have given her a 'tentative' pass, as has Harry, the goat, and she is relishing the utter freedom of living in the country.....
AND i can come out here whenever I want to use the cabin and paint! Heavenly bliss!
I might be a tad jealous, but my friends put in nearly thirty years living in Northern BC, and lucked out with jobs for both of them on this sometimes strange but wonderful island....

Elain, If you get a chance, do pop in to Gail's Studio very close to the Vesuvius ferry terminal. She has a lovely selection of beautiful bottles and bowls and clocks. I think the studio is number 14 on the Saltspring list. And when there give her our regards, please.
well an island lovers dream, comes with the usual island lovers dilemma... horrendous storms and winds, 70,00 without lights and power in lower mainland, power here went out, ferries aren't running at all.... oh well.. another day ill spent in paradise wathcing torrental rain douse the landscape. The creek that runs past the bedroom window is gurgling happily!

As I fellow island lover I know the pluses and minuses canayjun. Nothing comes without a cost. For island lovers who also like to travel it can be a double whammy. Stuck on an island with no transport available off the island and when you can get off, getting to a major airport can cost as much as the flight to wherever from the major airport.
Example, today is the last flight out of Vancouver to Paris (yes France, not Ontario) by Zoom Airlines for the season. I could have booked it on Thursday for $99 plus taxes one way. How much would it cost you to get to Vancouver airport from Saltspring?
actually, it dosent cost that much by float plane... i asked myfriend and it is $70 to downtown vancouver, and you could take a shuttle from the airport from there... where did you find such a great deal???

Zoom airlines website? Zoom, Flyglobespan and Canadian Affair are the 3 cheapest ways to fly from Canada to the UK and some other European destinations. Zoom is the only one that flies year round though. The other 2 fly from spring to fall only.
I would always check those 3 when looking for a flight to the UK or the other European cities they cover.
So it would cost you more to get to the airport from Saltspring than the flight to Paris costs canayjun. The wonders of airfare pricing plans.
