I have recently returned from Uganda and in my preparations I discovered it is half the cost to purchase a one world business class ticket in south africa than in my home Australia!!!!!!!! I therefore got to Joburg on a freebie with frequent flyer points in cattle class for just $350 and purchased the return leg to oz as part of a round the world ticket via south america and europe. Most of my trip will be spent in south america next year but I will be returning through Europe and it is likely to be at the end of July. The ticket would allow me to have four flights within Europe but at the moment the only routed flight is Madrid London because I am flying into Madrid from Lima in South America on a direct flight.

I doubt if I will have much money left to spend in Europe but would appreciate spending a week somewhere to rest up. It will be summer and so much of Europe is packed out with tourists at that time which I hate. Can anyone suggest a small place that won't break the bank?

You've got me waltzing to the possibility of doing likewise matilda.!.
Can you buy the economy ROW ticket in S.A for a similar low margin ?
The prices Im quoted ex sydney/melb/brisbane now approach $4000 on the limited 26000km ticket once the fuel surcharges & taxes are added - I considered trying to buy in Bangkok instead but it was just to difficult & too time consuming.
Midsummer in europe is madness, one year I spent a few months up on the Baltic coast of the old east germany, it was relatively cheap as many folk head south, BUT around the lovely old city of Lubeck, and round to Rostock & Sherwin might be ok - but quite some way from madrid-london Im afraid
best wishes

Portugal is wonderful! And the cheapest, (I heard) in Europe to visit.

Just don't settle down too quick. There's lots to it.

And...

Tie me kangaroo down, Sport.

Was backpacking in England during wet summer and found a v.cheap trip to Isle of Rhodes for week, hotel included. Luckily it was away from tourist area, about 20 mins walk to Old Rhodes but close to large super market & beaches. Beautiful weather. Caught local buses to tourist sights - fantastic history.

Czech Republic is not too expensive by European standards. Take train or bus to Kalovy Vary from Prague, a beautiful and very quaint little spa town. If you haven't already been, you can't go past Rome as a wonderful city to explore. Not cheap though but worth it and don't miss the ruins of Pompeii.
