I'm planning to visit UAE next year on my way to Iran. My nationality requires me to get a visa for UAE and because of this, I need a sponsor. Their immigrations website states that a hotel can be the sponsor, but does anyone know which type of hotels can function as sponsors? Is it merely the 5 star hotels, or can even guesthouses/hostels/budget hotels function as sponsors?

In other words, what's the best way that an independent traveler who does not have any acquaintances/friends in UAE can get a visa?

I believe the official line (at least according to the UAE Embassy in London) is that "most major hotels are able to sponsor and arrange visas". I'm guessing that would probably preclude guesthouses, hostels, and the like. To be sure, you might want to locate a hostel online and email/call them to see if they can sponsor you or not.

I dont know about hostels (although I suspect not), but anywhere that is a licensed hotel can arrange your visit visa. You might find that the very very budget options arent interested in doing so, but any bog-standard 3 star hotel will be arranging these kind of visas on a daily basis - it tends to be lower income travellers who require the visas for entry to UAE, so the cheaper hotels probably have much more experience at it than the 5 stars. They normally require you to commit (and pay upfront) for a minimum stay of 3 nights before they will arrange the visa for you, and it can be arranged easily in 2 days, although much better to give them 4 days notice.
