Totally agree with 8.

I would add that you avoid translucent / see through material as well. It is still reasonably warm so stick to cottons. As someone mentioned above, the A/C in most malls and restaurants are set to cold (thanks to the think any colour but green movement) so carry a wrap / sweater with you.

The lady in question in # 8's second para was not only Muslim, she was drinking alcohol and the complaint is what kicked all this off.

Just keep the fact that you are not married low key. Plenty of ladies here keep their maiden names, including all/ most Arab women as per their tradition.

I was in Abu Dhabi which I get the impression is more conservative than Dubai and I saw women dressed in all different ways. Some even wore tank tops which I think is a bit disrespectful there but other than that you can pretty much wear what you like. Just try to be a little conservative about how you dress.

I'd really say if you want to be respectful cover your shoulders and knees.

Really appropriate=long skirt/trousers, shirts with long sleeves
Get away with=almost anything, people are now used to Russian tourists wearing miniskirts and very revealing blouses.

It is up to you to decide. However, you should be more conservative outside Dubai, i.e. don't walk around Sharjah in a miniskirt.

Most western women wear shorts on a regular basis in Dubai. Hardly anyone notices. You will be fine.

Some of the older Arabs may find this "offensive" but 99% of women wearing decent length shorts will never encounter a problem.
