Hi again

Alternative to the below post: how easy it is to take a hired car from Dubai into Oman. I hold a UK licence. How much is the extra insurance at the border for a few days and how much extra the rental company will charge.

Cheers!

Thanks again!

It is feasible but mind that you have to give the rental agency enough time to organise the red tape and insurance for you. It is not possible to do this within just a few hours. No way you could simply take the car and buy insurance at the border. Omani immigration is checking all documents and would easily see if you didn't have the proper documents with you. There is no way you could fix this without the car rental's prior approval.

Typically they will charge you a significant extra fee, and the insurance will also be quite expensive (haven't done it by myself recently so don't ask me how much exactly). An alternative you might wish to think about is to take a cheap flight (flydubai, Oman Air, airarabia) to Muscat and rent from there. One of the cheaper agencies at Muscat airport is Thrifty's where you can book a car through their international website without the slightest hassle.

Close to impossible to take a rental car into Oman as you would be leaving your passport with the rental agency as a guarantee for the car.

@mohit_masand - No, car rental agencies in UAE (and Oman) do not keep your passport. However they will make photocopies of it, your driving license, and of course will require a credit card (no debit cards accepted). I have rented cars multiple times from Dubai and went to Oman with them from 2006 to 2008. I also rented cars for over a year without taking them into Oman and never was my passport kept by the agencies. Most recently I rented less than 2 months ago and the passport was not kept.

@OP - Please remember that you must inform the car rental agency well in advance in order to find out if they offer the service and its price. Do not expect them to assist you if you only tell them upon collection that you want to travel to Oman with it.

Thanks guys!

I have a deal with Dollar UAE before leaving home. There will be an additional insurance of AED300 for five days to take car into Oman. Due to collect car on 19 Sep.
