I will be in Dubai on a business trip in November and I am thinking of using low cost carrier Fly Dubai for a short visit to Beirut. I am concerned that my carry on bag may exceed 7 kgs and that they are very strict on this issue and that they weigh each bag to ensure that it complies with their rules. Here is my question:

What if I use online check in for my flight? Normally, when you use online check in and print your boarding pass from a computer, you can usually go straight to passport control, security and to the boarding gate without stopping at the airline check in counter first. Will they weigh my bag even if I use online check in and avoid stopping at their check in counter at DXB terminal 2? If so, at what point would the bag go on the weighing scale?

Thanks.

I flew with Fly Dubai last week from Dubai to Muscat. They didn't appear to be particulalrly concerned about the size or weight of my hand luggage - no-one checked it although mine wasnt huge. If you're concerned that you might have significantly more luggage though, you could just pay a bit extra to check it in - it's pretty cheap. Have a good flight!

Were you able to do online check in for your flight and did you proceed directly to your boarding gate without stopping at the check in counter? Also, there have been mixed reports regarding their service on the ground. Did you have any issues at DXB terminal 2?

As far as I know, FlyDubai does not have online check-in. there is nothing on their web site indicating that you can check-in online. As long as your bag is not excessively bulky or large, you should be fine to carry it on.

I have also heard that fly Dubai tends to change their schedule and/or cancel flights at the last minute. Is that a widespread problem with the airline? I just want to make sure before booking because Qatar Airways is only $50 more for the same route (Dubai to Beirut). Hence, I am trying to decide if it is worth it paying the extra $50 for a better quality airline.

I've not heard about any reliability issues with flyDubai, it seems like a fairly well run operation, but then again the press here will generally not report anything negative about government owned companies. Going with Qatar for an extra $50 is probably worth it if you dont mind the transit time in Doha. Other option is to fly Air Arabia from Sharjah, it's only 30 mins by taxi from Dubai, depending on the time of day. Or try Etihad from Abu Dhabi.
