Dear all,

I know that the living cost in Abu Dhabi is high, but I generally love to eat outside and try some food from other countries. My question is : are there any food market or similar in Abu Dhabi, where we can have local food at reasonable price? I actually love street food, wonder if there is available in Abu Dhabi?

Thank you very much for any infos...

Not so easy to find in AD - esp at the moment as it's Ramadan. And it's so hot here people prefer not to eat outside, unless picniccing - which is an institution!

Try the area between Hamdan Street (5th) and Khalifa(3rd) at the Salam Street end - the royal vegetarian does great cheap indian food, and is always full of low paid indian workers getting their thalis - also a great chaat place next door.

There are shisha cafes which do food all over the place too.

Lebanese flower which has a couple of branches also does good local food - one on Defence Rd, 11th Street

Yeah I love Lebanese Flower too.
Very, very cheap Indian restaurants abound but some of them have rather dubious hygiene standards e.g. cockroaches crawling around the place. Though my husband has eaten at loads of them and maintains he has never had a dodgy stomach.
They used to cook schwarmas outside on the street but that got banned about 7-8 years ago.

Thank you very much Spicegal and Vicky for the tipps...
I love indian food...so will try it when I am in AUH.

How is the price of comestible there, like carrots, potato or vegetables in the supermarket? higher than in europe?
I probably will stay in AUH effectively Jan 2009 for two years, wonder if I should take some can food from Europe?

Thanks

No - you shouldn't take canned food from Europe unless there is a particular thing that you love. Carrefours is going to have a pretty wide selections of most foods. You may not be able to get a particular brand of something - but as far as whole categories - they are all there. There are also other major stores (Spinney's is one) that have everythign.

Fresh vegetables were a bit cheaper than my suburban US store - but quality wasn't as high. Not sure how it compares to prices elsewhere.

It depends on whether the fresh produce has been imported or is local, so some things you can get very cheaply others you just shut your eyes and pop in the trolley anyway!
Agree with Suzanne - you can get just about anything here. You can't always guarantee that they'll have your favourite brand of peanut butter, for example, but there's not much you can't get.

Hi there, If you like Indian Food - Try Canopy Resturant - it is close to Royal ( All behind Macdonald's in Bani Ya St cnr with Hamdon)

The food at Canopy is very very tasty - try the "Chicken Jal Freeze" yum yum.

Also worth eating a few swama's from the juice bars + the juices (mixed fruit juice is a good way to start)

Also the Pakistani resturants servce great Chicken and Fish birayni ( rices dish with lots of meat) along with mixed grills.

Food in Abu Dhabi (non hotels) is very reasonable and the competition is hot.

The only time I have got a bug here was after eating Thai food at the Hilton!
cheers

Wow..thanks Jaffa...lots of food. I am getting hungry now :)
Of course I love Indian food. Will definitely try it after I reach Abu Dhabi! Any good Thai food (but not in Hotel Restaurant, can not afford it). How much does it cost approximately if we eat outside, like this indian food at Canopy?

Thanks Jaffa..

You can eat really well at some of the small Indian places for under 30AED.

At little gem for if you want a beer with your curry is the Marina Club, next to Abu Dhabi Mall - normally only the hotels serve alcohol and charge top dollar - this place is pretty good food and reasonable price, and has beer - a big bonus in my book!

There's really plenty of good food here - and as already mentioned, the supermarkets are excellent too mostly.
