We have a day or 3 in UAE, and our main interest would be Sharjah. However we fly into and out of Dubai, arriving at 2130, leaving at 1030. Should we stay in Dubai and day-trip to Sharjah? Would getting in and out at those times from a Sharjah hotel with backpacks be a bad idea? By bus/metro that is, not taxi.
Thanks in advance.

I think you would be best to stay in Dubai and day-trip to Sharjah.

If you stayed in Sharjah, you would be travelling in the rush hour to get your flight out at 10:30. The traffic is very heavy going from Sharjah to Dubai in the morning rush hour (many people live in Sharjah and commute to work each day in Dubai) so it's difficult to say how long it would take you.

Best to stay in Dubai, ideally at a hotel near a Metro station.

Whilst you said your main interest is Sharjah, if you stay for 3 days, I would recommend spending at least one of those days looking around Dubai. If you're looking for the more traditional part of Dubai, go down to Creek-side areas of Bur Dubai and Deira, have a look around the souqs, and take an abra across the Creek.

A 10:30 flight equals 08:00 check-in.
Rush hour for the Sharjah to Dubai traffic starts at 06:00 and runs through to 09:00 at least.
In a taxi you could expect that 10km journey to take between 1 and 2 hours.

By bus, you'd need to leave your hotel in Sharjah at 05:30 to be sure of getting to the airport in time.
I strongly recommend that you stay in Dubai on the night before you fly.

There's nothing to stop you staying in Sharjah for the first part of your stay though. Its cheaper and if you are going to be using buses and metros instead of taxis, the trip from Dubai - Sharjah and back on a daily basis will eat up vast quantities of your time.
