Hello

I will change flights in Dubai, coming from Mumbai and continuing to Manila. I have a lot of luggage with me, weighing more than the allowed 32 kg. Should I choose another airline and not fly via Dubai, considering Dubai Civil Aviation prohibition on excess luggage (se below excerpt from their website)?

Checked baggage allowance

Emirates has increased all weight based checked baggage allowances by 10 kg, meaning we now have one of the world’s most generous baggage policies. Economy Class customers can now check in 30 kg, Business Class travellers may take 40 kg and if you are flying First Class you can travel with 50 kg of checked baggage. Piece concept routes (itineraries involving USA, Canada and Brazil) are not affected.

You can find out how much baggage you can check in using our baggage calculator. You can also work out how much any excess baggage, over and above the free allowance, will cost you.

If you have calculated your allowance to be over 32 kg (71 lb), please note that Dubai Civil Aviation prohibits the acceptance of any one piece of baggage weighing more than 32 kg (71 lb), into, out of or via Dubai International Airport.

I think they mean that a single piece of luggage must not weigh more than 32 kg. Anyhow, their baggage allowance (30 kg) seems to be generous compared to most other carriers' (20 kg). Do you think they will be fussy about if my total baggage (2 pieces) weighs more than 30 kg? Will I need to pay for the overweight? Anyone with any experience of Emirates Airlines?

The 32 Kg limit is per bag. There are no issues if its divided into multiple pieces.

Generally Emirates will always be flexible up to 5Kgs over the limit, and depending how full the flight is, often they'll let you get away with a lot more than that. I'd say they were one of the best of the big airlines for their baggage policies.

I routinely check in excess weight and I'm rarely asked to pay for it on Emirates, unless it goes more than 20Kg over. My personal record is 97 KG of excess, and I didnt pay a thing, but that was an exceptional occasion. Cant imagine it ever happening again.
