We (young couple 27/30) will have a day stopover in Abu dhabi (from 6 am to 9pm) and want to do a tour through the desert (sand, jeep and possible camels is what we are looking for)... anybody got any budget ideas?

Since you already know your exact stopover times I guess you have already booked and paid for your airline ticket?
As you are asking here I am also guessing you have booked it online directly with the airline rather than with a human being – aka travel agent?
Contact the airline and ask for their ‘stop over’ OR 'day tour' brochure. They will have a contracted company that will have a desert tour to meet your needs.
IF you had done this before paying for your airline ticket the whole price – inclusive of visa (if required), ‘meet and greet’ at the airport, the tour in the desert as you have requested, any meals and a return transfer to the airport in ample time to connect with your outgoing flight.
Your only additional cost usually not specified in the brochure is a tip to the tour leader and driver.
Once you have a price and an itinerary, come back to TT with some comparative questions and somebody else on TT will be able to advise of possibly cheaper tours.
Of course IF you have booked this with a travel agent can you please name them so any other potential customer can avoid them. This is basic 101 travel agent training.
